| June 22, 2010 |
Thinking of getting a prepaid card to make purchases? If so do you know exactly what it will cost you? Unfortunately for many consumers the answer to the second question is much different to that of the first. This is because the world of prepaid cards, which at one time was relatively small has grown tremendously over the past year. For that reason there are more prepaid cards available than ever before, each costing cardholders different amounts for similar functions.
As stated in an article on Bankrate.com entitled "Don’t overpay for prepaid debit cards", while prepaid cards do offer consumers an alternate payment method that can save you money; consumers must still pay attention to the terms associated with the plastic. One of the most important things that you must do before applying for or loading your money on any plastic is understanding the fees that are involved. Due to the fact that every card is different, just funding the card without knowing things such as transaction, deposit and balance inquiry fees could cost more than you are willing to pay.
When looking at the focus that prepaid cards have received over the last couple of months it is truly amazing on how they have evolved from "just another payment alternative". Today many prepaid cards offer things that were never once seen on reloadable plastics. We are seeing the introduction of rewards, cash back on purchase, discounts at the point of sale and even high yielding savings accounts. As for consumers, whereas in the past it was typically consumers with lower household incomes using prepaid cards; times have changed and Americans from every income range are utilizing these cards to make purchases both online and in brick and mortar locations.
