Hot new products are popular targets for credit card phishing, so not surprisingly, Apple’s new iPad has become a prime target for phishing scams.

The Fed recently released new rules for gift cards, set to step into effect on August 22. Designed to protect consumers from unexpected costs, the new provisions require both bank and gift card issuers to offer more consumer-friendly and clearly explained terms of service.

Credit card issuers may have to wait a while longer before they emerge from the grip of the record credit card defaults, which most card issuers have been struggling with over the past year.

According to the Fed report, much of last year’s drop in consumer debt, both for mortgages and credit card debt, came from write-offs rather than pay-offs.
