The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act, which was signed into law on May 22, 2009, and which went into effect February 22, 2010. Among other provisions, the CARD Act limits how and when credit card companies can raise consumers' interest rates and how much they can charge for late and over-limit fees. It also requires credit card companies to provide clearer explanations of finance charges, fees, interest rates and similar information in credit card statements.
