Charge-off

Debt that is written off by a credit card company or other creditors as uncollectible after a certain period of time has elapsed. Essentially, the creditor will charge off the debt from its books and hand it over to an outside debt collection agency. If your credit card debt is charged off, you can generally expect it to have a negative effect on your credit score.
