Chip-and-PIN
Credit card technology that involves a computer chip that encrypts data during transactions. The cardholder must also enter a personal identification number (PIN) to make a purchase. The dual layers of security are intended to reduce the fraudulent use of credit cards. Already common in Europe, chip-and-PIN technology is now supplementing magnetic stripes in the U.S.
