Fraud alert
A notice on your file at a credit bureau alerting potential lenders that you may be a victim of fraud or identity theft. The lender can then contact you to make sure you were the one to apply for the loan, thus reducing the chance that an identity thief can open accounts in your name.
Fraud alerts remain on your credit report for 90 days. If you have police report that shows you were a victim of identity theft, you can get an extended alert that lasts up to seven years.
