Hold

This can have two meanings. One type of hold occurs when a merchant notifies your credit card company that they will be charging your card a certain amount in the future. This generally occurs for transactions in which the final amount is not known when you present your card -- such as restaurant bills, because the card gets swiped before you leave your tip. Another type of hold can occur when there's a problem with your account and the credit card company denies you credit. This can happen when you haven't paid your bills or when there's indication that some kind of fraudulent use of your account has occurred.
